TO AN AGED ELDER
The war-worn soldier loves to dwell,
The deeds of yore he loves to tell.]
The times and scenes ever cheer his heart.
He loves to tell what was his part.
And so the elder, always true,
When age comes on thus loves to do;
His backward way he loves to trace
To see how well he's run the race.
On Jesus' work he loves to dwell,
of struggles made he loves to tell;
The form and face of other years,
Rise in his heart to eyes bring tears.
Though sadness comes, there comes some joy,
And this is why his thoughts employ
Their time and powers on the past,
And tell of scenes which did not last.
The Shepherd Chief has called his sheep
Their forms now lie in dust asleep,
And he is waiting on this side
While most have crossed the rolling tide.
The voice he hears from other shore
Comes from those sheep he knew before.
They are calling him unto his home
to leave his wilderness and come.
His heart now stars is on the divide,
Past flows here some over the tide,
His want for Joys draw to his Lord
Would stay on eargh to teach His word.
He's waiting now, will not wait long,
But soon he will join the ransomed song.
And soon he will stand before the throne
To hear the plaudit, "you've, well done."
Dobyn's tribute to Joseph ended with a prayer: "Peaceful by thy quite slumber; Peaceful in the grave so low; Thou no more wilt join our number; Thou no more our songs shalt know." While in the Christian church Joseph attained prominence both as a sermonizer and as a poet. According to an obituary published in the Indianopolis News he left an autobiography.

TO AN AGED ELDER
The war-worn soldier loves to dwell,
The deeds of yore he loves to tell.]
The times and scenes ever cheer his heart.
He loves to tell what was his part.
And so the elder, always true,
When age comes on thus loves to do;
His backward way he loves to trace
To see how well he's run the race.
On Jesus' work he loves to dwell,
of struggles made he loves to tell;
The form and face of other years,
Rise in his heart to eyes bring tears.
Though sadness comes, there comes some joy,
And this is why his thoughts employ
Their time and powers on the past,
And tell of scenes which did not last.
The Shepherd Chief has called his sheep
Their forms now lie in dust asleep,
And he is waiting on this side
While most have crossed the rolling tide.
The voice he hears from other shore
Comes from those sheep he knew before.
They are calling him unto his home
to leave his wilderness and come.
His heart now stars is on the divide,
Past flows here some over the tide,
His want for Joys draw to his Lord
Would stay on eargh to teach His word.
He's waiting now, will not wait long,
But soon he will join the ransomed song.
And soon he will stand before the throne
To hear the plaudit, "you've, well done."
Dobyn's tribute to Joseph ended with a prayer: "Peaceful by thy quite slumber; Peaceful in the grave so low; Thou no more wilt join our number; Thou no more our songs shalt know." While in the Christian church Joseph attained prominence both as a sermonizer and as a poet. According to an obituary published in the Indianopolis News he left an autobiography.
