William Lashbrook was born on 17 October 1717 in Meeth, Devon, England, likely the son of John Lashbrooke and Mary Jacob. It seems William found himself at odds with the law when he was 20 years old. On 28 October 1737 William and John Whittingham were caught breaking and entering the Dwelling House of William Palmer around 7:00 in the evening. They were indicted for stealing a clock valued at thirty shillings, two iron bars valued at one shilling, and 2 cheeks of grate valued at one shilling. In today’s dollars this would have been around $230. Both were found guilty. Barely a month later William was indicted a second time along with Thomas Waters and Joseph Whittingham on 29 November 1737 for stealing five Cheshire Cheeses valued at thirty shillings. William’s punishment for this second offence was to be transported in June 1738 on the ship named “Forward” as a “bonded” passenger or criminal to America. The ship landed near Dumfries in Prince William County, Virginia. It was named after the Captain Jonathan Forward who was employed in the black slave and convict trade starting around 1718 and eventually became the official transportation contractor. The voyages were dangerous and on one disastrous voyage in 1742 fifty eight of the convicts on board died. He married Mary Bridges, daughter of William Bridges and Elizabeth Medcalf, circa 1748 in Dumfries, Prince William County, Virginia.
