He then attended Duke University and the Jefferson School of Law in Louisville from 1932 to 1937. He was admitted to practice as a certified public accountant in 1940 after having been asociated with Humphrey-Robertson and Company in Louisville since 1933. Harry served in the Navy during World War II where he rose to the rank of lieutenant. He was the issuing agent of war bonds of the entire 5th Naval District headquartered in Norfolk, Virginia. Harry married between 1935 and 1940. His wife's name was Helena.

Harry Walker Bottorf Jr died on 20 September 1953 in Our Lady of Mercy Hospital, Owensboro, Daviess County, Kentucky, at age 40 at 4:00 in the morning. Funeral services were held on 21 September 1953 in Davis Funeral Home, Owensboro, Daviess County, Kentucky, with Rev. John C McQueen, pastor fo the First Presbyterian Church officiating assisted by the Rev. Robert E. Humphreys, pastor of the First Baptist Church. Pallbearers were Morton Hollbrook, Dan McCarrol, William L. Wilson, Jack Cox, William Hamilton, and John Anderson. His cause of death was heart failure.
