James Yewell Bottorf was born on 30 April 1880 in Daviess County, Kentucky. He was the son of George Merton Bottorf and Dicey Ellander Yewell. James Yewell Bottorf married Bessie B Lashbrook, daughter of William Edmund Lashbrook and Cora Eleanor Hackett, in 1908. James Yewell Bottorf was described as tall with a stout build, blue eyes and light hair in 1918. He registered for the draft for World War I on 12 September 1918, while living at 1219 Allen Street, Owensboro, Daviess County, Kentucky, reporting he was employed as a bookkeeper for American Tobacco Company. He lived with William Edmund Lashbrook in April 1930 at Owensboro, Daviess County, Kentucky, at 1604 Freemont Street. James attended the Owensboro College and Georgetown College in Georgetown, Kentucky in his early years. He was a charter member of the Third Baptist Church and for 20 years was auditor of the American Tobacco Company. He later worked with the Short Brothers Motor Company and the F.A. Ames Company. In the later years of his life he was connected with the Lashbrook Realty Company.
