Cornelius Ennis
M, b. 1797, d. before 1887
- Relationship
- 2nd great-granduncle of Taylor Cosby Cottrell Jr
Cornelius Ennis was born in 1797 in Amherst County, Virginia. He was the son of George Washington Ennis and Mary Frances Campbell. The Ennis family joined a caravan of wagons that left Amherst County, Virginia in 1805 for Warren County, Kentucky. This migration westward included the families of Ennis, Campbell, Page, Martin, Swinney, Allcock and others. The Ennis family settled south of Bowling Green, near Rich Pond Grove, Warren County, Kentucky.
Cornelius Ennis married Mary Polly Johnson on 12 November 1817 in Warren County, Kentucky. She was the daughter of the Reverend Richard Johnson and Lucy Hunter of Sumner County, Tennessee. It has been said they had two children but there is no information corroborating this. There is considerable conflicting information on Cornelius and his four marriages and travels throughout several states. Little well sourced data is available to the author thus information on his potential children is somewhat limited and only included where it seems likely based from documents available and reviewed.
Cornelius next appeared in Alabama where he married Adisa Graves also known as Dicey, on 3 June 1821 in Lauderdale County, Alabama. Drnelius and Dicey likely had at least two boys who are mentioned in the will of Cornelius’s father. However, it is interesting that the will states they were “said to have been begotten by his son Cornelius.” Cornelius and Dicey may have also had a daughter. The sons names may have been John C. Ennis and George Riley Ennis and the daughter may have been Elizabeth Ennis, also known as Amy Ann.
Cornelius seems to have moved to Arkansas and married a third time to Louisa B. Dodd who was the widow of Arkansas lawyer Benjamin Franklin Potter. Louisa was born on 16 February 1800 in Virginia and died on 5 April 1852 in Waverly in Lafayette County, Missouri. Cornelius and Louisa may have had three children including a daughter that died young, a daughter named Louisa Texarkana Ennis, and a son named William H. Ennis.
By 1856 Cornelius seems to have moved to Lafayette County, Missouri where he married Emila Pucket. He is alone on the 1860 census in Lafayette where he is found working as a carpenter in Middleton. It is surmised that he finally ended up in Randolph County, Arkansas, died around 1870, and may have been buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Pitman, Arkansas. Cornelius apparently kept a work journal that contained some family history which was passed down in the family and much of the information above may have come from this journal. Most of the Ennis family and their children remained in Warren County living in various towns throughout the county.
Cornelius Ennis died before 1887.
