Thomas Sale Campbell was born on 3 November 1810 in Amherst County, Virginia. He was the son of Wiley Campbell and Elizabeth Marsha Sale.
Thomas was raised in a Christian home by parents who were devout members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He spent many winters in his youth at his father's home where visiting preachers frequently preached. Whenhe was about fifteen years old he went to a camp-meeting and during a sermon preached by John Early he sat weeping in the congregation. He found permanent comfort in Christ on 28 July 1826 and became engaged in leading others to Christ. In August 1830 he was solicited to accompany the junior preacher of the local circuit and on 20 August 1830 preached his first sermon to a rude mountain congregation.
In 1832 he was appoiinted to Caroline Circuit where W.H. Starr was in charge. By 1834 he begin traveling as a circuit pastor. In 1834 he traveled to Wilkes, in 1835 to Pittsylvania, in 1836 to Pittsboro, in 1838 to Greensboro, in 1839 to Salisbury, in 1841 and 1842 to Roanoke, in 1843 to Granville, and in 1844 to Mocksville and Salisbury. His health became so impaired by successive attacks of malaria that he became unable to preach for a period of several years. In 1831 Thomas joined the North Carolina Methodist-Episcopal conference at New Berne.
In February 1833 Thomas passed an approved examination at the end of his second year at the Methodist-Episcopal Converence held in Petersburgh, Virginia. He was then ordained deacon by Bishop Hedding. At the end of his fourth year, having been approved on his prescribed studies, he was ordained elder at the Conference at Lynchburg, February 1835 by Bishop John Emory.

Willis D Ennis married Caroline Jane Hinds on 11 July 1839 in Warren County, Kentucky. In 1880 Willis moved to Jasper County, Missouri to a farm 8 miles north of Carthage. Willis D Ennis was widowed with the death of Caroline J (Hinds) Ennis on 15 February 1883 in Warren County, Kentucky. A bond for the marriage of Willis D Ennis and an unknown person was signed on 11 May 1885 in Bowling Green, Warren County, Kentucky, in the sum of 100.00 signed by Willis Ennis and Nannie L. Skiles. He married Nannie L (Casey) Skiles on 12 May 1885 in Warren County, Kentucky, at the residence of the bride with John S. Campbell and Joseph A. Lang serving as witnesses. In 1893 Willis moved to Sarcoxie and then moved back to Carthage around 1895. Willis D Ennis was widowed with the death of Nannie Lynch Casey in 1895 in Missouri.

Just before the Civil War around 1860 Valentine Johnson, faterh of Roland Johnson, started construction on a family home for William Ennis and his wife Mandane. The home was not finished until shortly after William's death in 1862.
