A bond for the marriage of Wiley Sale Campbell and an unknown person was signed on 5 August 1850 in Bowling Green, Warren County, Kentucky, in the sum of 50 pounds signed by Wiley S Campbell and Joseph Wren.
Wiley Sale Campbell married Eliizabeth J Wren, daughter of Joseph Wren and Elizabeth Jeane Evans, on 22 August 1850 at Warren County, Kentucky. Wiley Sale Campbell was widowed with the death of Elizabeth J (Wren) Campbell on 11 September 1864 in Warren County, Kentucky. A bond for the marriage of Wiley Sale Campbell and Louisa C Wise was signed on 23 May 1865 in Warren County, Kentucky, in the sum of 100.00 signed by W.S. Campbell and William A Wise. Wiley Sale Campbell married Louisa C Wise, daughter of William A Wise, on 24 May 1865 in Warren County, Kentucky, at the home of William A Wise, father of the bride.
Wiley Sale Campbell appeared on the 1880 census, agricultural schedule of Rich Pond District, Warren County, Kentucky; as the owner of a farm with 178 acres of improved land and 115 acres of unimproved land. The total value including land, buildings, machinery and livestock was 7,466 dollars. Eighty weeks of labor, costing 300 dollars resulted in 962 dollars of produce during 1879. Livestock included seven and four milk cows which produced 200 pounds of butter the previous year. The farm included 8 additional cattle, one of which was purchased the previous year, and one which was slaughtered. The farm included 32 sheep and 10 lambs which produced 114 pounds of fleece, 35 swine, and 35 chickens which produced 200 eggs. During the previous year 37 acres of land were used to produce 935 bushels of indian corn, and 36 acres produced 280 bushels of wheat. Additional crop produced included 25 bushels of potatoes and 1,900 pounds of tobacco. Eight acres of land held 400 apple trees and 20 peach trees which produced 400 bushels of apples. Twenty cords of lumber, valued at 40 dollars, were cut from the land in 1879.
Wiley lived in the same neighborhood as his father John Sales Campbell. He was well known in the county and his obituary indicated that many friends and relatives would join the bereaved family in morning their loss. A tribute of respect in a local newspaper indicated he "had accumulated a goodly amount of this world's goods, which he nobly used in providing for the necessitites of his family, giving to the needy, and supporting the church. He was a liberal and big hearted man, delighted in making others happy and using his means, recognizing it as a gift of God. He was a quiet, unassuming man, attending to his own business and not other people's affairs. By his quiet industry and manly integrity he had made a host of friends, and was often referred to as a model, for example. He wanted an opinion of his own, and insisted that others should have the same."
Wiley Sale Campbell left a will on 5 April 1885 at Warren County, Kentucky. In this will he stated that it was his desire that his grave be enclosed with an iron fence and that the fence also enclose the graves of his children if he were buried by them. He left his household articles and furniture to be divided equally among his children and stated that Mary Jane, wife of A.J. Kirby, and his son J.W. Campbell, children of his first wife, were to receive the sum of Four Hundred and Twenty Five Dollars to be divided equally between them because this was the amount he had received from his first wife's estate. He indicated that Eldon and Nellie were to receive the sum of One Hundred Dollars each to be used for the completion of their education and that Mary Jane was to receive fifty acres of land including his dwelling house, barns, and orchards but she was to pay each of the other four heirs the sum of Two Hundred Dollars each for improvements unless the dwelling and barn did not remain at the time of his death.
Wiley also indicted in his will that J.W. Campbell was to receive fifty acres of land to be taken from the tract of land previously purchased from the Allender tract of land and that Elden was to receive the remaining fifty acres of land that had been purchased from the Allender tract of land. He stated that Lenora and Nellie were to receive the remainder of his lands, approximately 50 acres each and if they fell short of 50 acres each they were to be paid the difference at the rate of Fifteen Dollars per acre or if they are greater than 50 acres each they are to pay the estate the sum of Fifteen Dollars per acre above 50 acres. It was also his wish that his daughters Lenora and Nellie have a home with his daughter Mary Jane and her husband A.J. Kirby during their minority and that the remainder of his estate was to be divided equally between his five children. George Campbell, Wiley's brother, was listed in the will as the Executor.
Wiley Sale Campbell died on 23 February 1886 at Warren County, Kentucky, at age 61; in the evening at his home near Memphis Junction. James Alexander Sale Campbell appeared on the 1880 census, agricultural schedule of Rich Pond District, Warren County, Kentucky; as the owner of a farm with 64 acres of improved land and 12 acres of unimproved land. Total value including land, buildings, machinery and livestock was listed as 4,350 dollars. Hired labor costs during 1879 for 61 weeks at a cost of 200 dollars resulted in 650 dollars of produce. Livestock included two horses, two mules, and two milk cows which produced 50 pounds of butter the previous year. The farm included 3 additional cattle which were purchased the previous year, one which was sold, and one which was slaughtered. The farm also included 50 chickens which produced 365 eggs. During the previous year 18 acres of land were used to produce 750 bushels of indian corn, 7 acres produced 100 bushels of oats, and 12 acres produced 100 bushels of wheat. Additional crop produced included 12 bushels of potatoes and 4,000 pounds of tobacco. One acre of land held 100 apple trees and 15 peach trees which produced 10 bushels of apples. Fifteen cords of lumber, valued at 30 dollars, were cut from the land in 1879.
James built a family home around 1885 on a piece of land which adjoined his father's land and later bought the acreage from his father just before his father's death in 1891.
