     John Leven Kirk was born on 17 September 1814 in Augusta County, Virginia. He was the son of James Kirk and Jane G Powell. John was six years old when his family moved to Daviess County, Kentucky and settled on a farm and was thirteen years old when his father, James Kirk, died. He then lived with his mother, Jane G (Powell) Kirk, until he was eighteen years old when he left the farm in charge of his brothers. John Leven Kirk married Susannah B Cottrell, daughter of Reuben Cottrell and Sarah Homer Patman, on 5 January 1836 in Daviess County, Kentucky. John and Susan had a total of six children. The name and sex of the 6th child is unknown. However, they were born and died before 1874. John Leven Kirk was widowed with the death of Susannah B (Cottrell) Kirk on 18 June 1853 in Daviess County, Kentucky. John Leven Kirk married Sarah Adeline (Stout) Hemingway, daughter of Enoch Stout and Delila Whittaker, in November 1854 in Daviess County, Kentucky. John Leven Kirk was ill with a diseased kidney in June 1880.

John Leven Kirk died on 12 March 1885 in Daviess County, Kentucky, at age 70. He was buried in Bethabara Baptist Church Cemetery, Philpot, Daviess County, Kentucky.

Elizabeth J (Cottrell) Kirk was widowed with the death of James A Kirk on 15 June 1878 in Knottsville, Shelby County, Kentucky.

Elizabeth J (Cottrell) Kirk died on 2 August 1889 in Daviess County, Kentucky, at age 64. She was buried in Bethabara Baptist Church Cemetery, Philpot, Daviess County, Kentucky.

They settled on a farm in Masonville Precinct. James A Kirk married Elizabeth J Cottrell, daughter of Joseph Sheppard Cottrell and Lucy Bryant, on 28 September 1848 in Kentucky. James and Elizabeth had two additional children who were born and died before 1867. James and Elizabeth were both members of the Baptist church at Bethabara, in Philpot, Kentucky.

James A Kirk died on 15 June 1878 in Knottsville, Shelby County, Kentucky, at age 59. He was buried in Bethabara Baptist Church Cemetery, Philpot, Daviess County, Kentucky.
