     Peter Cottrell Jr was born on 23 February 1783 in Henrico County, Virginia. He was the son of Peter Cottrell and Susannah Sheppard. Peter Cottrell Jr married Sally Ellis, daughter of William Ellis, on 29 November 1804. Peter Cottrell Jr began military service on 19 March 1813 in Henrico County, Virginia, as a Sergeant in a Company of Infrantry commanded by Captain William Henley, 33 Reg't Virginia Militia. Peter was paid a total of 1.80 for the five days he was mustered. He ended military service on 29 March 1813 in Henrico County, Virginia. He was a veteran of War of 1812 on 1 April 1813. He witnessed the probate of the estate of Peter Cottrell on 17 April 1816 in Henrico County, Virginia. Upon the probabe of his father's will on 17 April 1816 received one sixth of his father's property including all the Negros excepting his brother Abel's boy George. Peter also received 127 acres of land, the land on which he was living in 1816. He also received a share in his father's saw mill along with his brothers Richard, Samuel, William, Abel, Reuben, and Joseph.

Peter Cottrell Jr died on 1 March 1827 in Henrico County, Virginia, at age 44.

     Abel Cottrell was born on 5 January 1790 in Henrico County, Virginia. He was the son of Peter Cottrell and Susannah Sheppard. Abel Cottrell married Rosa Jane Thornton on 27 April 1810 in Shelby County, Kentucky. Upon the probabe of his father's will on 17 April 1816 received one sixth of his father's property including all the Negros excepting his brother Abel's boy George. Abel also received over 125 acres of land in any part of his father's land not already disposed of as he might like best together with 100 dollars in cash. He also received a share in his father's saw mill along with his brothers Richard, Samuel, Peter, William, Reuben, and Joseph. Abel purchased five sections of public land in Lewis County Missouri, 80 acres each totaling 400 acres, under the provisions of the act of Congress of the 24th of April 1820 entitled “An act making further provision for the sale of the Public Lands” through the Register of the Land Office at Palmyra, Missouri on 24 April 1833. Able purchased another 80 acre section of public land under the 1820 Public Land Act through the Register of the Land Office at Palmyra, Missouri on 8 June 1833.

Abel Cottrell died on 8 July 1852 in Lewis county, Missouri, at age 62. He was buried in Cottrell Cemetery, Lewis county, Missouri.

     Reuben Cottrell was born on 4 April 1792 in Near Richmond, Henrico County, Virginia. He was the son of Peter Cottrell and Susannah Sheppard. Reuben Cottrell married Sarah Homer Patman, daughter of John Patman and Elizabeth Smith, on 16 March 1811 in Henrico County, Virginia. Reuben Cottrell began military service on 19 March 1813 in Henrico County, Virginia, as a Sergeant in a Company of Infrantry commanded by Captain William Henley, 33 Reg't Virginia Militia. Reuben also received approximately 125 acres of land on Tuckahoe Creek along with 100 dollars in cash and one of his father's stills. He also received a share in his father's saw mill along with his brothers Richard, Samuel, Peter, William, Abel, and Joseph. Reuben and his family moved from Shelby County, Kentucky to Daviess County, Kentucky about 1833.

In the spring of 1834 Rev. Cottrell organized the First Baptist Church of Owensboro. At the time Ownesboro has a population of 150 people, only two of which claimed to be Baptists. Initial church membership included eight white and eighteen black members. During the first year he baptised two colored women. He continued to serve as pastor until 1842 when a split occurred in the Bethabara Church as several members including Rev. Cottrell were excluded. However, they were laer restored and lettered off into a new church, the Macedonia Baptist. Rev. Cottrell served the Bethabara Church a second time as minister from 1845 through 1849. He was also one of the founders of the Daviess County Baptist Association.



Reuben Cottrell died on 29 May 1862 in Daviess County, Kentucky, at age 70. He was buried in Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery, Habit, Daviess County, Kentucky. He left a will on 18 December 1862 at Daviess County, Kentucky. His estate was probated on 4 June 1863 at Daviess County, Kentucky, with Jas M Dawson, RC Fuqua, and John Taylor Witnesses and Calvin E Cottrell executor.

There were 4 additional daughters, names and dates unknown.

     Charles Waddell Cottrell was born on 30 April 1751 in Henrico County, Virginia. He was the son of Richard Cottrell and Judith Smith. Charles Waddell Cottrell married Mary Sheppard on 4 September 1777 in Henrico County, Virginia. Charles Waddell Cottrell witnessed the probate of the estate of Richard Cottrell as one of the executors named in the will on 2 April 1792 at Henrico County Courthouse, Henrico County, Virginia. Charles Waddell's father left him a tract of land purchased from James Ball. Said land lying in the County of Henrico on a branch of Tuckahoe Creek, which contained by estimation two hundred and sixteen acres. He also left him a negro boy named David, a negro girl named Poll, and a negro woman named Jude along with her child Sue. In addition, he left him all the cattle on the plantation, one bed and furniture, and one third part of his household and kitchen furniture, except what was otherwise disposed of to his other heirs. Charles and Mary had several children, one of who was named Charles Cottrell Sheppard. This child was specifically named in the will of Richard Cottrell, father of Charles Cottrell with a bequith leaving him a negro girl named Dorcas.

Charles Waddell Cottrell died after April 1792.

     Jacob Cottrell was born on 27 April 1753 in Henrico County, Virginia. He was the son of Richard Cottrell and Judith Smith. Jacob's father left him one tract of land which he bought from John Sutton Tanner in the County of Henrico on a branch called Long and Hungry, which contained by estimation two hundred and twenty seven acres, or or less, a negro boy named Matt, a negro girl, and five pounds in cash or store goods in his will which was probated in April of 1792.

Jacob Cottrell died on 6 September 1808 in Smith County, Tennessee, at age 55.

According to Minnie Jane Cottrell, "the records of Goochland County Virginia shows John William owned a great deal of land, and was considered wealthy."

     Benjamin J. Cottrell was born on 2 December 1837 in Henrico County, Virginia. He was the son of William Cottrell and Susan Halsey. Around 1856 Benjamin moved to Richmond, after attending a military school at Lynchburg, and "started a coal business as an agent for brothers who were working the mines near Clayton". For many years his place of business was on the southeast corner of Eighth and Main Streets. After moving his business several times, he finally settled in a office at 201 South Ninth Street. An abstract from Virginia records, published in the Virginia Genealogical Society Quarterly, listed Luther J Cottrell and Benjamin Cottrell, children of William Cottrell in 160 acres of a land warrant, assumed to be after 1858 since Benjamin's age was listed as being 21 years of age in December 1858. Benjamin J. Cottrell married Rebecca Imogen Pilcher, daughter of John A Pilcher and Elizabeth Ann Parsons, circa 1861. Benjamin served in the Twenty-fifth Virginia Regiment, Cavalry in 1863 as a non-commissioned officer in the Confederacy. Benjamin J. Cottrell married Mariah Elizabeth Pace on 24 December 1863 ceremony performed by Rev. Doctor J B Jeter. Benjamin J. Cottrell and Mariah Elizabeth (Pace) Cottrell lived on 1 June 1880 at 11 West Cary Avenue, Richmond, Independent City (Richmond), Virginia. Benjamin J. Cottrell and Mariah Elizabeth (Pace) Cottrell lived in June 1900 at Richmond, Independent City (Richmond), Virginia, at 11 West Curry Street. In Feburary 1906 Benjamin Cottrell had lived on West Cary Street for over 33 years. When he boke ground in that neighboorhood there were only two or three other residences on the block. In 1906 he was also Richmond's oldest coal dealer.

Benjamin J. Cottrell died on 25 February 1906 in Richmond, Henrico County, Virginia, at age 68 at 10:00 am in his home at 11 West Cary Street after an illness of nearly three months. His cause of death was the result of "some strange, almost inexplicable, tubercular trouble, which developed very suddenly and made alarming headway." Funeral services were held on 26 February 1906 in Calvary Baptist Church, Richmond, Independent City (Richmond), Virginia, at 4:00 in the afternoon. He was buried in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Independent City (Richmond), Virginia.

Lillie was listed as a cousin, Lillie Cotrell, age 13 and single in the household of Jno R Chapman in the 1880 census in Daviess County, Kentucky enumerated on 25 June 1880.

Lillie Verina Cottrell married William Henry Harrison, son of James Andrew Harrison and Mary Catherine Cosby, on 24 February 1886 in Manchester, Virginia.

Lillie Varnia (Cottrell) Harrison died on 17 December 1916 in St. Elizabeths Hospital, Richmond, Independent City (Richmond), Virginia, at age 50 at 3:10 in the morning.      Minnie Jane Cottrell was born on 26 February 1872 in Yelvington, Daviess County, Kentucky. She was the daughter of Peter Cottrell and Mary Magdalene Cosby. Minnie Jane Cottrell Orphaned by the death of Peter Cottrell on 2 January 1878 in Yelvington, Daviess County, Kentucky. Minnie Jane moved to Manchester, which later became South Richmond, around 1888.

Minnie Jane Cottrell married Edmond Goodman Hooker, son of Edmond Anderson Hooker and Margaret Elizabeth Harrison, on 17 July 1889 in Manchester, Virginia. Minnie Jane (Cottrell) Hooker and Edmond Goodman Hooker lived on 23 April 1910 on Hull Street, Richmond, Independent City (Richmond), Virginia. Minnie Jane (Cottrell) Hooker and Edmond Goodman Hooker lived on 12 January 1920 at 3115 Hull Street, Richmond, Independent City (Richmond), Virginia.

Minnie was historian of the Elliott Grays Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy in 1933. In April she also served as the general chairmain for arranging a musical and dramatic entertainment at the Soldier's Home. The Melodramatic Pagent of the War Between the States was the title of the production and the veterans of the home were the special guests of the chapter. Minnie Jane Cottrell lived in April 1940 in Richmond, Independent City (Richmond), Virginia, at 3115 Hull Street. Minnie served as president of the Fonticello Woman's Christian Temperance Union for 25 years and was elected president of the WCTU on 15 September 1938. She was also appointed as a delegate to the State Convention of the WCTU in 1938. She was active in the affairs of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Daughters of 1812, and Elliott Grays' Chapter of the United Daughters of the confederacy. She was a charter member of the Weathford Memorial Baptist Church.

Minnie Jane (Cottrell) Hooker died on 25 February 1945 in Richmond, Virginia, at age 72 early in the day at her residence on Hull Street. Her cause of death was cerebral hemorrhage. Funeral services were held on 27 February 1945 in Wetherford Memorial Baptist Church, Richmond, Virginia, at 11:00 in the morning. She was buried on 27 February 1945 in Maury Cemetery, Richmond, Independent City (Richmond), Virginia, in the E.G. Hooker family plot.

Harriette Ann Lacy

     Harriette Ann Lacy was born circa 1823 in Virginia. She was the daughter of Fleming Lacy. Harriette Ann Lacy married John William Cottrell, son of William Cottrell and Susan Halsey, on 4 March 1844 in Goochland County, Virginia.

Hariette Ann (Lacy) Cottrell died on 26 July 1892.

His death certificate indicated he was an old bachelor and was "altogether a single man - never married."      Rosa Belle Cottrell was born on 28 March 1851 in Henrico County, Virginia. She was the daughter of John William Cottrell and Harriette Ann Lacy. According to Minnie Jane Cottrell, Rosa was named for a poem. She lived alone, by preference. She had "a very sweet and lovable manner." She was "fond of singing and playing for her friends and relatives."

Rosa Belle Cottrell died on 25 November 1935 in Bowles Place, Goochland County, Virginia, at age 84 at 8:20 in the morning. Her cause of death was old age and heart failure. She was buried in W.C. Alvis home, the Old Webster Homestead, Chesterfield County, Virginia. According to Minnie Jane Cottrell, Rosa's burial "was very sweet as she was very spiritual in her life. There were many friends and relatives, also colored friends attending her funeral. At the burial a colored woman, who was a teacher and was taught by Rosa Cottrell sang:
I want to be an Angel and with the Angels stand
A crown upon my forehead, A harp within my hand."
