William Wilburn Wilson Mullen was born on 15 August 1852 at Bond County, Illinois. William Wilburn Wilson Mullen was also known as William Mullen and according to his son Curtis H. Mullen, "he never went by any name except William Mullen and he abbreviated that to Wm. Mullen." He was the son of Elgen A. Mullen and Eliza C. Getts. This report uses Wilburn because he signed his marriage license as Wilburn W. Mullin. A middle name of Willington is said to be from his wife's Bible. According to his daughter, Norma the Bible had both Wilburn and William listed as his name. However, in her manuscript entitled My Folks, Norma states that her father's name was William Wilber Wilson Mullen. The use of Wilson is interesting as his mother's stepfather was Avington Wilson and he lived in that household after the death of his parents. In a letter, Norma states that her father's name was Wilber William Wilson Mullen and that he always siged his name as Wm. Mullen. After he was orphaned at age 8, he lived with his grandmother near St. Louis. William Wilburn Wilson Mullen and Charles Fuller appeared on the census of 1860 at Jefferson County, Missouri, in the household of A. K. Wilson. Both boys had attended school within the year. William was enumerated as age nine and Charles as age twelve. William Wilburn Wilson Mullen suffered the death of his step-grandfather, Avington Kimberland Wilson before June 1870.

William Wilburn Wilson Mullen married Bethana Bartlett, daughter of Andrew Jackson Bartlett and Cynthia Ann Gaunt, on 28 February 1878 at Durham Township, Hancock County, Illinois; with the ceremony performed by Stephen Ekles, Justice of the Peace. Wilburn was twenty-three and Bethana was seventeen. About 1879, William joined the Christian church. William Wilburn Wilson Mullen appeared on the census of 1880 in the household of Cynthia Ann (Gaunt) Bartlett at Hancock County, Illinios. Wilbur was listed as age 28, born Missouri and farming. He was listed with his wife, Bethana. William Wilburn Wilson Mullen appeared on the census of 1885 at Adams County, Iowa; as Wm Millin age 32, a married farmer. Enumerated in the household were; B. Mullin age 25, a married female, R. B. Mullin, a one year old male; Cynthia A. Bartlett, a 52 year old widow and Andrew J. Bartlett, a 21 year old single male. They were living in the south east, south west part of Prescott Township (number 72), Range 33 Section 2. William and Andrew were both entitled to vote and were subject to military duty.

William Wilburn Wilson Mullen moved in August 1887 to Jack Forks, Howell County, Missouri; He traveled in a covered wagon pulled by a team of oxen. His wife and children, accompanied by his aunt, traveled by train. He and Bethana Bartlett settled on a farm where he built a slab-board house of rough cut lumber with a wood shingle roof. Newspapers were used to cover the inside walls to increase the warmth. William Wilburn Wilson Mullen and Bethana (Bartlett) Mullen obtained a shingle mill and sold eggs for three cents a dozen to support their growing family. William Wilburn Wilson Mullen suffered the death of his grandmother, Elizabeth (Cadwallader) Getz Wilson on 25 December 1889 at St Louis, St Louis (Independent City), Missouri. William and Bethana opened a meat market in Mountain View, where he did his own butchering. Stella, Nellie and Kerton had attended school for three months of the year. The family relocated to a newer house with a few acres of land closer to Mountain View in Howell County. About 1902, Ralph W. Mullen, who was working in Illinois, visited his family. This was likely around the time of Nellie's wedding. About 1904, family friends moved to Colorado looking for better opportunities. William and Bethana Mullen decided to move there also. Bethana, Stella and Norma traveled ahead, William and Curtis were to follow later. Bethana and Stella worked in the drying yard of their friend's apple orchard. William decided that he wanted to live the rest of his life in southern Missouri, so Bethana, Stella and Norma returned to Howell County. On the return trip they stopped in Ottawa, Kansas, to visit Nellie, who was very ill after losing a baby.

About 1906, William built several houses in Mountain View. At the same time, he built a five room house for his family, about a quarter mile from town with a small acreage and they had a Jersey cow, a few chickens and some hogs. William preferred Jersey cows as he thought their milk was richer and tasted better. He always painted their home white with red trim and a name plate over the front door. Ralph W. Mullen visited his parents again in 1906 from Omaha, Nebraska, where he was working as a street car conductor. Cynthia (Gaunt) Bartlett, Bethana's mother came to live with William and Bethana about 1906. Her bedroom was the only one located downstairs. He rose every morning at four to cut fire wood before going to the meat market. According to his daughter Norma, he would sing as he worked and his favorite songs were "When the Roll is Called Up Yonder, I'll Be There" and "If a Tree Don't Fall on Me, I'll Live til I Die." Bethana never liked living and farming in southern Missouri. She and William decided to open a combination meat market and family style restaurant. Bethana baked her own bread and pies and served all you could eat for twenty five cents. A large bowl of beef soup with lots of crackers was five cents a bowl. Norma was washing dishes by the time she was eleven. They operated the restaurant for several years.

Bethana was enumerated as his wife, age 57. They owned their home on Second Street free of mortgage. In February 1920, William suffered a siege of lagrippe, which was followed by bladder trouble. On 3 January 1921, William was able to be down town for the first time since his surgery. William and Park Phipps owned the City Cafe on Oak Street. After William's death, Park Phipps sold his interest to William's widow, Bethana Mullen.
