Emma Melsheimer Stafford was born on 22 August 1903 at Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky. She was the daughter of Cyrus Black Stafford and Laura Montgomery Fulton. Stafford was enumerated as age 26 and a trained nurse working in the United States Marine Hospital in Louisville. Emma Melsheimer Stafford was also known as "Aunt Sissy" by her nephew, Charles Fuller Sharrard, Jr. She began military service on 15 March 1941 as a nurse with the U.S. Army. She lived on 9 March 1946 at Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky; at the time of her father's death. She lived in June 1951 at Japan; as a member of the Army Nurse Corp. According to her nephew, Charles Fuller Sharrard, Jr., after an extended tour of duty in the Pacific, Emma Stafford returned to her "constant home in Louisville KY and rejected all contact with family and friends." He further states that she "was a very private person who shunned our entire family to the point of almost becoming a recluse." She ended military service on 13 August 1957; with the rank of captain. She died on 4 May 1996 at Kentucky Veterans Center, Wilmore, Jessamine County, Kentucky, at age 92; at 2:45 a.m. of congestive heart failure. She was buried on 7 May 1996 at Camp Nelson National Cemetery, Nicholasville, Jessamine County, Kentucky; with graveside funeral services. Betts-West Funeral Home, 404 North Main Street, Nicholasville, Kentucky, was in charge of arrangements. Grave located in section I, site 429.

Cyrus Black Stafford Jr was born on 25 April 1916 at Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee. He was the son of Cyrus Black Stafford and Laura Montgomery Fulton. Cyrus Black Stafford Jr was also known as Buddy. He appeared on the census of 1920 at Duval County, Florida; enumerated 13 January as a lodger in the household of James T. Greene. Cyrus Black Stafford Jr was graduated circa 1938 at Lafayette, Tippecanoe County, Indiana; from Purdue University. He was an engineer-designer at Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. He began military service at Camden County, New Jersey, with the U. S. Army Air Corp and was assigned ID # 0-393246. He was graduated in May 1940 at Randolph Field, Texas; from Officers Training School and was commissioned a second lieutenant. He married Mary Martha Willis circa 1942 at Baton Rouge, East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana. Lieutenant Colonel Cyrus B. Stafford was an operational engineering officer with the Twelfth Air Force headquarters in Italy. During his service he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters and four Battle Stars. He was posthumously awarded the Legion of Merit for "exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services in the Mediterranean theater of operations from Oct. 20, 1944 to May 1, 1945." Cyrus Black Stafford Jr died on 1 May 1945 at Italy at age 29; "in an aerial accident." He was buried at Follonica, Italy. He was reburied at Florence American Cemetery, Florence, Italy; in Plot H, Row 13, Grave 4.

Mary Martha Willis was also known as Marty. She was widowed with the death of Cyrus Black Stafford Jr on 1 May 1945 at Italy. Mary Martha (Willis) Stafford lived in September 1945 at 240 S. Maple Avenue, Oak Park, Cook County, Illinois. She lived on 9 March 1946 at Oak Park, Cook County, Illinois; at the time of her father-in-law's death. According to Mr. Charles Sharrard, Marty Willis was married once before she married his uncle, Cyrus Stafford and twice after his death. She died in November 2004 at Wheaton, DuPage County, Illinois. She was cremated and according to her wishes, Charles Sharrard "sprinkled her ashes in a small park" where they often walked. The park was near the nursing home in Wheaton, where she had lived for ten years.
