     James Grason Brittain was born on 10 December 1840 at near Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois. He was the son of Francis McGuire Brittain and Feiminy Larimore. James Grason Brittain was also known as Jim Brittain. Before James G. Brittain was three years old, the family moved to Keokuk County, Iowa, where they farmed. He appeared on the census of 1850 in the household of Francis McGuire Brittain at Keokuk County, Iowa, as age nine. In the spring of 1856, they moved to Missouri. James Grason Brittain appeared on the census of 1860 in the household of Francis McGuire Brittain at Grundy County, Missouri, as James age 18, a student and a farm laborer.

James Grason Brittain married Mary Elizabeth Barnes on 15 September 1860 at Half Rock, Mercer County, Missouri. "When he was twenty, he secured the sixty acres just east of his father's place. His older brother George W. bought the farm just northeast --- and they lived close together for more than fifty years." James Grason enlisted in Company A, 23rd Missouri Regiment of the Union Army at Macon, Missouri. R. D. Brittain's history has a good outline of James G. Brittain's war experiences. After the war, James returned to farming. He bought 40 acres that joined his farm to the east, built a larger home and a large barn. The barn was still standing in 1952, but the house had been destroyed by fire. James G. Brittain returned home from the Civil War on 20 June 1865. James Grason Brittain was widowed with the death of his wife, Mary Elizabeth (Barnes) Brittain circa February 1867 at Mercer County, Missouri.

James Grason Brittain married Mariah "Maria" Ellen Brown, daughter of William Woodward Brown and Mary Jane Donaldson, on 4 October 1868. They owned their home on Chestnut Street in Galt, free of mortgage. Included in the household was James' brother in law, Richard D. Brown age 69.

A bad snow storm hit Linn County on 23 December 1918, shutting down the railroads and making the roads impassable. Dollie's aunt, Effie Snapp had planned to arrive on December 23 for Christmas and Dollie's wedding. The storm delayed her arrival until December 26, causing her to stay in Kincaid only eight miles away. Dolly Fae Brassfield married Benjamin Oscar Brown on 29 December 1918 at Blue Mound, Linn County, Kansas; at the Brassfield home, with the Rev. C. Arthur Hull officiating. The romance began when both Ben and Dollie lived in Mountain View, Missouri. Dolly Fae Brassfield was a compositor at The Blue Mound Sun at Blue Mound, Linn County, Kansas. "She had learned the trade when The Sun editor, her brother-in-law, published a paper in Hazelton, Indiana." She and Benjamin Oscar Brown moved on 30 December 1919 to Dodge, Nebraska, where Ben was the local agent for the Chicago and Northwestern railroad. Freida lived in Parkview Manor and Good Shepherd Home after moving to Blair. Vernice was Freida's favorite sister, but she was easily put out with Dollie. Freida couldn't stand that Dollie wore anklets with high heel shoes.

Freida (Brassfield) Haley died on 18 August 1998 at Tekamah Nursing Center, Blair, Washington County, Nebraska, at age 90. A prayer service was held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, 20 August 1998, at Campbell - Aman Funeral Home. Funeral services were held on 22 August 1998 at First Lutheran Church, Blair, Washington County, Nebraska; at 10:30 a.m. She was buried on 22 August 1998 at Woodlawn Cemetery, Wausa, Knox County, Nebraska; with graveside services at 3 p.m. Freida was buried next to her husband, Leon Debs Haley.

Her remains were taken to the M. A. Lowry home for the night. Funeral services were held again on 4 February 1924 at Mercer Baptist Church, Mercer, Mercer County, Missouri; conducted by Rev. W. E. Kauffman of Princeton, Missouri. She was buried on 4 February 1924 at Ravanna Cemetery, Ravanna, Mercer County, Missouri, under the direction of O. A. Moore, undertaker.
