James White Sr. married Mrs. Mary (Mason) Higginbotham on 30 April 1842 at Cabarrus County, North Carolina. James and Mary were the parents of four children. James White Sr. was a farmer between 1850 and 1870 at Cabarrus County, North Carolina. He appeared on the census of 1850 at Cabarrus County, North Carolina; enumerated 5 November. He suffered the death of his mother, Minnie Florence (Murray) Keltner on 16 November 1977 at Oliver C. Anderson Hospital, Maryville, Madison County, Illinois. Elmer James Keltner suffered the death of his brother, Edwin Hale Keltner on 4 December 1977 at Oliver C. Anderson Hospital, Maryville, Madison County, Illinois. Elmer James Keltner was "of the Protestant faith, following in the pattern of his maternal great-grandfather, James Brittain, a self-styled Baptist minister."

Elmer James Keltner died on 16 January 2003 at Anderson Hospital, Maryville, Madison County, Illinois, at age 86; at 3:41 p.m. of "multiple complications from a severe form of arthritis: Polymyalgia Rheumatic." He was cremated and no visitation or funeral services were held at the his request. Arrangements were handled by Saksa Mateer Funeral Home of Edwardsville.
