A. age 20, Sarah age eight, Francis age three, Hettie age one and three sons; John R. age seventeen, W. J. age five and W. A. age five. The Thomas D. Joyner and Margaret McCurdy Joyner household was enumerated following the household of her father, Jacob McCurdy on the 1880 census. He died on 5 June 1888 at age 58. Caleb Linker was listed as age 27 and a farmer with real estate valued at $500 and personal property valued at $150. Elizabeth C. Linker was listed as age 25. He was widowed with the death of his wife, Elizabeth Catherine (White) Linker on 1 February 1862 at Cabarrus County, North Carolina. Caleb Linker began military service on 7 July 1862 at Cabarrus County, North Carolina, Confederate States of America, as a private in the North Carolina Infantry, 57th Regiment, Company F. "Reported present through May 11, 1863. Captured at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 1-5, 1863. Confined at Davids Island, New York Harbor. Paroled at Davids Island on August 24, 1863. Received at City Point, Virginia, August 28, 1863, for exchange. Hospitalized at Richmond, Virginia, January 29, 1864, with a gunshot wound of the left hip. Place and date of wound not reported. Returned to duty prior to May 1, 1864. Wounded in the left knee and/or left thigh and captured at Cedar Creek, Virginia, October 19, 1864. Hospitalized at Baltimore, Maryland. Transferred to Fort McHenry, Maryland, May 9, 1865. Released at Fort McHenry on June 10, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance." He died on 17 September 1865 at age 32. He was buried at Rocky River Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Rocky River, Cabarrus County, North Carolina; grave RR 8 G 362.

Leah Koon Nason petitioned for Letters of Administration for the estate of her sister, Eliza Koon Ely on 7 March 1879. The petition list the heirs as two sisters, a brother and the children of two deceased sisters. On 7 March 1879, John T. Nason and Marcellus G. Dubard signed a $500.00 bond each for Leah Koon Nason to serve as administrator of Eliza Koon Ely's estate. Letters of Administration for Eliza Koon Ely's estate were granted to her sister, Leah Koon Nason on 7 March 1879. Leah Koon Nason purchased a spinning wheel for $1.80 and a side saddle for $ .85 on 18 December 1879 at the sale of her sister, Eliza Koon Ely's personal estate. She appeared on the census of 1880 in the household of John Thomas Nason at Grenada County, Mississippi, as Leah Nason, age 62 and keeping house for her son. As administrator of her sister Eliza's estate, Leah Nason was allowed a fee of $129.78 which equaled 7% of the value of the estate. Leah (Koon) Nason appeared on the census of 1900 in the household of John Thomas Nason at Grenada County, Mississippi, as Leashia Nason age 82, the mother of four children, two living. Leah Koon was a member of the Presbyterian church. She died on 19 February 1902 at at the home of Mr. Marcellus DuBard, DuBard Station, Grenada County, Mississippi, at age 83. She was buried on 20 February 1902 at Spring Hill Cemetery, Grenada, Grenada County, Mississippi; with services by Rev. J. C. Carothers.

He appeared on the slave schedule of the census of 1860 at Carroll County, Mississippi; with 2 slave houses; 4 black males, ages 50, 17, 8, and 6 months; 3 black females, ages 37, 17 and 14; and 1 mulatto male, age 34. George Thomas Koon served as a Corporal in Captain Stanford's Company, Mississippi Light Artillery, CSA. He began military service on 6 November 1861 at Grenada, Yalobusha County, Mississippi, Confederate States of America, as a 34 years old corporal with Captain Thomas J. Stanford's Company, Light Artillery, Mississippi Volunteers. He appeared as a corporal on company muster rolls for May & June, September & October, November & December 1862 and January & February 1863. He appeared as a private on company muster rolls for March & April, July & August, September & October and November & December 1863. Note on the July & August muster roll stated that he was sent to the hospital 13 August 1863. The November & December muster roll noted that he was furloughed for thirty days on 30 December 1863, by General Johnston. George T. Koon was listed on pay receipt rolls for January 1 to March 31 and April 1 to May 31, 1864 as a teamster with Eldridge's Artillery Battery. He also appeared on a receipt roll dated 2 November 1863 for clothing for four quarters and on one dated 30 June 1864 for clothing for two quarters. George T. Koon, Hugh M. Nason, Robert L. M. Nason, Richard J. Nason, David T. Owens, Richard N. Owens, William O. Owens, Paul Penn and Robert B. Penn all serviced together in Stanford's Battery during the Civil War. He appeared on the census of 1870 at Grenada County, Mississippi; as the head of household, age 44, born in South Carolina and a farmer. Enumerated with him were Eliza and Enoch G. Ely. Eliza was listed as age 50, born in South Carolina and keeping house. Enoch was listed as age 26, born in Mississippi and a farmer.

George Thomas Koon died on 20 September 1878 at Grenada County, Mississippi, at age 52. He was buried at Spring Hill Cemetery, Grenada, Grenada County, Mississippi. George Thomas Koon died unmarried and without issue. The heirs to his share of his father's estate were his brother, two sisters and descendants of two deceased sisters.

Ely circa August 1844 at Carroll County, Mississippi. Eliza Ely, mother of Enoch G. Ely, under the age of 14 years, son of Enoch G. Ely, dec'd, was appointed guardian of her son during the February 1848 term of the Carroll County Court. Eliza Koon appeared on the census of 1850 in the household of Jacob Koon at Carroll County, Mississippi, as Eliza Ely, age 31. Eliza (Koon) Ely appeared on the census of 1870 at Grenada County, Mississippi, in the household of George Thomas Koon as age 50, born in South Carolina and keeping house. Listed with her was Enoch G. Ely, a twenty six year old year farmer, born in Mississippi. Eliza Koon lost her only child, Enoch G. Ely Jr. to yellow fever on 22 September 1878 at Grenada County, Mississippi. When Eliza became ill with yellow fever, Dr. J. R. Fielder charged $3.00 each time, for a visit, prescription and medicine on September 27, 29, 30 and October 1, 2 and 3.

Eliza Koon died on 4 October 1878 at Grenada County, Mississippi, at age 58; in the yellow fever epidemic. She was buried at Spring Hill Cemetery, Grenada, Grenada County, Mississippi; next to her son Enoch G. Ely, Jr.
Nason and Dubard billed Eliza Ely's estate 4 October 1878, for $36.15. The bill list $12.75 for "mederson and wine stimulens" paid to John Hughes. Also listed was $1.50 for lumber, $15.00 for labor and $6.90 for trimmings for two coffins.
On 28 January 1879, Nathan Koon ordered his sister, Eliza's cemetery marker from R. L. Rosebrough Sons of St. Louis, Missouri, at a cost of $28 to be paid on delivery. A. G. Dubard was the local agent and C. M. Toombs was the salesman. Nathan requested a 2 1/2 feet American marble gravestone the same as photo #2221, with an open Bible instead of a lamb, inscription "Eliza Ely, Born Jan 16th 1820 Died Oct. 4th 1878" and the following verse:
          Kind angels! watch her sleeping dust
          'Till Jesus comes to raise the Just
          Then may she wake with sweet surprise
          And in her Savior's image rise.
Leah Koon Nason petitioned for Letters of Administration for the estate of her sister, Eliza Koon Ely on 7 March 1879. The petition list the heirs as two sisters, a brother and the children of two deceased sisters. Harry and Charles Aven of Grenada County, Mississippi, Loualie Nipper of Surrounded Hill, Arkansas, and Jennie Perkins, wife of Joseph Perkins of Fort Smith, Arkansas were listed as heirs of Eliza Koon Ely's deceased sisters. On 7 March 1879, John T. Nason and Marcellus G. Dubard signed a $500.00 bond each for Leah Koon Nason to serve as administrator of Eliza Koon Ely's estate. Letters of Administration for Eliza Koon Ely's estate were granted to her sister, Leah Koon Nason on 7 March 1879. Eliza Koon Ely's cemetery marker was paid in full 27 March 1879. As payment was due upon delivery, the marker must have been placed at her grave near this date. W. H. Heath, R. H. Nason and M. M. Odom appraised the goods and chattel of the Eliza Koon Ely estate at her late residence on 7 June 1879 and filed their report the same day.

Dubard note (desperate), $222.30. Total value of receipts was $1854.05. Disbursements were listed by voucher as; no. 1: burial expenses $36.15; no. 2: Dr. Fielder's bill $28.05; no. 3: Eliza's marker $28.00; no. 4: Enoch's marker $25.00; no. 5: John T. Nason's fee $5.00; no. 6: J. T. Dubard note by suit $222.30; attorney's fee for B. C. Adams, Jr. $57.81 and administrator's fee $129.78. Total disbursements were $532.09. Court fees were $23.75. Final estate balance for distribution was $1298.21.

Nipper at Prairie County, Arkansas, as Saline Nipsier age 44 and keeping house. Selina Koon died before 26 April 1877 at Prairie County, Arkansas. On 26 April 1877, Joseph Perkins applied to the Probate Court to have Allen J. Nipper cited to take out Letters of Administration on the Estate of Salina Nipper, deceased. The citation was granted by Judge William M. Warner. Jacob Allen Nipper was granted Letters of Administration on the Estate of Selina Koon on 15 October 1877 at Prairie County, Arkansas; after making the required $1000 bond with A. Boyd and Joseph Johnson as his securities. Jacob Allen Nipper presented to the Probate Court a final account of the estate of his mother, Salina Nipper on 21 April 1879 at Prairie County, Arkansas. Notice of the filing was published as required by law, no exceptions were noted and on 23 July 1879, the final account was confirmed, entered into record and A. J. Nipper relieved from liability as administrator of both his mother's and his brother's estates.

Ely Jr. appeared on the census of 1870 in the household of George Thomas Koon at Grenada County, Mississippi, as age 26, born in Mississippi and a farmer. Listed with him was Eliza Ely, age 50, born in South Carolina and keeping house. Dr. J. R. Fielder billed a $1.50 for prescription and medicine for 18 September 1878. Prescription and medicine for 19 September was $1.50. A third prescription and medicine on 20 September was also $1.50. On 21 September, Dr. Fielder billed three dollars for a visit, prescription and medicine.

Enoch G. Ely Jr. died on 22 September 1878 at Grenada County, Mississippi, at age 33; in the yellow fever epidemic. He was buried at Spring Hill Cemetery, Grenada, Grenada County, Mississippi. His mother, Eliza Koon Ely died of yellow fever on 4 October and was buried next to Enoch. On 28 January 1879, Nathan Koon ordered his nephew Enoch's marble cemetery marker at a cost of $25. He requested the marker be inscribed with the verse, "The Lord is my shepherd I shall not want." Dr. Fielder's bill was paid 12 February 1880 in the settlement of Eliza Koon Ely's estate.

Harmon J. Nipper

     Harmon J. Nipper was born circa 1821 at South Carolina. He married Selina Koon, daughter of Jacob Koon and Barbara Fletcher, on 8 February 1842 at Carroll County, Mississippi; ceremony performed by G. A. Graves, J. P. Harmon J. Nipper appeared on the census of 1850 at Yalobusha County, Mississippi; enumerated 3 October. Harmon J. Nipper was enumerated as head of household, age 29, and a farmer. Salina Nipper was enumerated as age 26. Enumerated in the same household were; John F. Nipper, age six, Jacob A. Nipper, age five and Edward C. Nipper, age three. He appeared on the census of 1860 at St. Francis County, Arkansas; enumerated 17 July. Harman J. Nipper was enumerated as head of household, age 38 and a teacher with real estate valued at $500 and personal property valued at $550. Salina Nipper was enumerated as age 32. The other members of the household were: John F. Nipper, age 17; Jacob A. Nipper, age 14; Edward Nipper, age 12; William S. Nipper, age 4; Martha S. Nipper, age 9 and Mary E. Nipper, age 2. Jacob, Edward, William and Martha attended school within the year. He began military service on 8 March 1862 at Des Arc, Prairie County, Arkansas, Confederate States of America, as a Private in Company C, 18th Arkansas Infantry.

18th (Carroll's-Daly's-Crockett's) Infantry Regiment was assembled at Devall's Bluff, Arkansas, during the summer of 1861. Some of its members were from Camden, De Witt, and Pine Bluff. With about 1,000 men it moved to Fort Pillow, Tennessee and was decimated by disease. Ordered to Corinth, where conditions were no better, many continued to suffer from sickness. Its strength was down to 425 effectives at Iuka, and in the fight of Corinth it lost 12 killed, 34 wounded, and 82 missing. Later it was assigned to Beall's Brigade, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. In April, 1863, the unit was united with Power's 14th and Lyles' 23rd Arkansas Regiments and in July was captured at Port Hudson. After being exchanged, it was reorganized and mounted. Attached to General Dockery's Brigade, Trans-Mississippi Department, the 18th fought at Mark's Mills and Jenkins' Ferry, and later disbanded. Colonels D. W. Carroll, Robert H. Crockett, and John N. Daly; Lieutenant Colonel W. N. Parrish; and Major Samuel H. Sutherland were its commanders.

Harmon J. Nipper died on 26 April 1862 at DeSoto County, Mississippi, Confederate States of America; likely of disease.
