In the division of her father's estate on 19 Dec 1827, Polly received the Negro slaves Asa, Rebecca and Susan, valued at $950. She owed the other heirs $43.43. Mary "Polly" Freeland likely appeared on the census of 1830 in the household of Creed E. Penn at Smith County, Tennessee, as one of two females age 5-10. Mary "Polly" Freeland married John Powell Hughes in August 1840 at Smith County, Tennessee. In 1841 John P. Hughes sold a male slave named Asa for a thousand dollars. Asa had belonged to Mary at the time of their marriage. In 1844, John P. Hughes sold a female slave named Beck that had belonged to Mary at the time of their marriage. Mary "Polly" Freeland and John Powell Hughes moved circa 1847 to Lewisburg, Marshall County, Tennessee. Mary "Polly" (Freeland) Hughes appeared on the census of 1850 in the household of John Powell Hughes at Marshall County, Tennessee; as age 36, born in Tennessee, a trader with $200 value in real estate. Appearing with him were Gideliah Hughes age 24, a merchant, Mary Hughes age 26, Jane age thirteen, Mary age twelve, James F. age ten, Martha age seven, Charles age five and Mildred A. age two. All were born in Tennessee and Jane, Mary, James and Martha had attended school within the year. On 10 February 1853, John P. Hughes left Lewisburg with a draft of horses traveling to Mississippi for trading. He left his wife and eight children in a very destitute condition with the promise of returning as soon as he finished his business. John Powell Hughes and Mary Freeland had at least two more children according to Hughes book. Charles H. and Elizabeth Agnes are said to have died in infancy. Mary Hughes filed a bill of complaint against her husband John P. Hughes on 4 December 1854, claiming he had left the family in very destitue condition on 10 February 1853. The bill stated that she had heard from him only a few times, the last of which was in April 1854 and that she was not sure he was alive. Mary's brother-in-law, John Walker Hughes served as her "next friend" and the bill was signed by her lawyer, W. W. Ward. The bill requested that title to the 91 acres she owned before her marriage and the interest in her mother's dower be removed from her husband and returned to her in the form of a trust to support her and their five children plus the three children from his first marriage. Mary "Polly" (Freeland) Hughes appeared on the census of 1860 in the household of Mary Agnes (Kyle) Freeland Penn at Smith County, Tennessee, as Mary Hughes age 36, keeping house with real estate valued at $800 and personal property valued at $200. Hughes children numerated in the household were Charles age fifteen, Martha age thirteen, Mildred age eleven, G. E. age nine and Cate age seven. Also enumerated in the household were Robert Penn age 26 and George C. Jones age thirteen. Mary "Polly" (Freeland) Hughes appeared on the census of 1900 in the household of her son-in-law, William Baldry Anderson at Logan County, Kentucky, as Mary Hughs, widowed, age 77 and the mother of five children with four living. Mary "Polly" Freeland appeared on the census of 1910 in the household of her son-in-law, William Baldry Anderson at Logan County, Kentucky, as a 87 year old widow and the mother of five children with three living. Mary "Polly" (Freeland) Hughes died on 11 December 1912 at age 89. She was buried at Piper-Hughes Cemetery, Cedar Bluff, Trousdale County, Tennessee.

Who gave it: trusting in his great mercy - And my body to the dust - to be buried at the Spring Hill Church burial ground, in a Christian like manner - by the side of my late Son William P Stokes - I farther ordain, Request and Will, that my burial expences and all my just and lawful debts be paid, out of the proceeds of the property the Lord has given me and of which I shall die possessed viz. The Real Estate, my two mules, one yoke of oxen. All my cattle Sheep Hogs - Wagon Cart and Buggy. House-hold and kitchen furniture farming utensils &le. All which I Ordain and Will be sold as soon as prachcable or best. And the proceeds be divided and distributed as follows, viz. I give and bequeath to William N. Penn of the State of Misourie, one thousand dollars. Beck circa 1867 at likely Carroll County, Mississippi. William Gaston Penn appeared on the census of 1870 at Grenada County, Mississippi; enumerated 12 July. Gaston W. was enumerated as age 33, a farmer with $300 personal property and eligible to vote. Laura C. was enumerated as age 30 and keeping house. Enumerated with them were Charles C. Penn age one, Ernest Penn age two months, and James P. Beck age 30 and eligible to vote. He appeared on the census of 1880 at Grenada County, Mississippi; enumerated 8 June. W. G. Penn was enumerated as head of household, age 37, and a farmer. Laura Penn was enumerated as his wife, age 40 and keeping house. Included in the household were a son Winston E. a 28 year old book keeper, a daughter Ida W. age 27 and a Black servant, Jim Clay age 15, an errand boy. He was a member of the Methodist church. W. G. Penn was a magistrate in Beat 1 for almost twenty years. He was widowed with the death of Laura C (Beck) Penn on 17 February 1909 at Grenada County, Mississippi.

William Gaston Penn died on 27 September 1909 at Grenada County, Mississippi; "at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. A. Odum." Funeral services were held on 28 September 1909 at Grenada, Grenada County, Mississippi; in the residence of his son, E. A. Penn and conducted by Rev. W. W. Mitchell. He was buried on 28 September 1909 at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Grenada, Grenada County, Mississippi; marker states "W. G. Penn died Sept 27, 1909 Aged 66 yrs."

Funeral services were held on 18 February 1909 at Grenada, Grenada County, Mississippi; at the home of her son, E. A. Penn, officiated by the Rev. W. W. Mitchell, pastor of the Methodist church. She was buried on 18 February 1909 at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Grenada, Grenada County, Mississippi.

     Charles Clifton Penn was born on 5 January 1869 at Carroll County, Mississippi. He was the son of William Gaston Penn and Laura C. Beck. Charles Clifton Penn appeared on the census of 1870 in the household of William Gaston Penn at Grenada County, Mississippi, as age one. Charles Clifton Penn appeared on the census of 1880 in the household of his father, William Gaston Penn at Grenada County, Mississippi, as Charles C. Penn age eleven, working as a field hand and having attended school within the year. Charles Clifton Penn married Nannie E. Knox on 20 February 1898 at Grenada County, Mississippi. Charles Clifton Penn appeared on the census of 1900 at Grenada County, Mississippi; enumerated 11 June. C. C. Penn was enumerated as age 31, head of household, a merchant and planter. Nannie E. Penn was enumerated as his wife, age 25. They lived on the farm they owned. Included in the household were one daughter, Laura N. age five months and William Boushe age 21, a dry goods and greens salesman. He suffered the death of his mother, Laura C (Beck) Penn on 17 February 1909 at Grenada County, Mississippi. Charles Clifton Penn suffered the death of his father, William Gaston Penn on 27 September 1909 at Grenada County, Mississippi. Charles Clifton Penn appeared on the census of 1910 at Grenada County, Mississippi; enumerated 23 April. Charles C. was enumerated as age 41 and head of household. Nannie K. was enumerated as his wife, age 35. They owned their home free of mortgage. Included in the household were two sons, William age nine and Charles R. age two and one daughter Laura N. age eleven. C. C. Penn received a car load of Tennessee mules and offered them for sale at Inman's stables according to an ad that appeared on 27 January 1911 in The Grenada Sentinel. He and Nannie E. (Knox) Penn moved circa 1913 to Columbia, Louisiana; "on a farm because of some extraordinary opportunities that were offered him." Shortly before his death, Charles moved his family back to Grenada for school advantages but he returned to the farm in Louisiana.

Charles Clifton Penn died on 5 February 1915 at Columbia, Louisiana, at age 46; caused by accidently drinking carbolic acid. The body arrived in Grenada at 4 a.m. Sunday morning, February 7, and was immediately taken to the family residence. Funeral services were held on 7 February 1915 at Grenada, Grenada County, Mississippi; conducted at the family residence at 2:30 p.m. by the Rev. J. C. Carothers of the Presbyterian church and the Rev. J. A. Hall of the Methodist church. He was buried on 7 February 1915 at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Grenada, Grenada County, Mississippi.

Willard Allen Odom married Dolly Turner on 20 February 1890 at Grenada, Grenada County, Mississippi. Willard Allen Odom was widowed with the death of his wife, Dolly (Turner) Odom on 20 July 1891 at Grenada County, Mississippi. Willard Allen Odom married Eleanor Miller on 4 May 1893 at Grenada County, Mississippi. Willard Allen Odom was widowed with the death of his wife, Eleanor (Miller) Odom on 9 May 1898 at Grenada County, Mississippi. Willard Allen Odom appeared on the census of 1900 at Grenada County, Mississippi; enumerated 8 June. Willard A. Odom and his daughter twelve year old daughter Laura were living in the household of Alfred J. Simpson. Willard was enumerated as age 45, widowed and working as a farm manager for Mr. Simpson. He married Ida West Penn, daughter of William Gaston Penn and Laura C. Beck, circa 1902 at Mississippi. Willard Allen Odom appeared on the census of 1910 at Grenada County, Mississippi; enumerated 21 April. William A. Odon was enumerated as age 44, head of household and a farmer. He owned his farm free of mortgage. Ida W. was enumerated as his wife, age 34 and the mother of four children, all living. Included in the household were four sons; (unreadable) M. age fifteen, John L. age thirteen, William West age six, Clifton P. age four and three daughters; Laura L. age twenty-three, Laura age three and Lueze age one month. He was farmer at Grenada County, Mississippi. W. A. Odom was a member of the board of supervisiors of Grenada County. He died on 22 January 1918 at Grenada County, Mississippi, at age 62; at 8 a.m., of pneumonia. Researcher's Note: Her parents Lucius Knox and Kitty Neal Knox died when she was a small child. She was raised by a bachelor uncle, Phil Knox, a veteran of the Civil War. She was educated at Grenada College, Grenada, Grenada County, Mississippi. She married Charles Clifton Penn, son of William Gaston Penn and Laura C. Beck, on 20 February 1898 at Grenada County, Mississippi. Nannie E. (Knox) Penn appeared on the census of 1900 in the household of Charles Clifton Penn at Grenada County, Mississippi; enumerated 11 June. C. C. Penn was enumerated as age 31, head of household, a merchant and planter. Nannie E. Penn was enumerated as his wife, age 25. They lived on the farm they owned. Included in the household were one daughter, Laura N. age five months and William Boushe age 21, a dry goods and greens salesman. Nannie E. Nannie E. Knox died on 9 June 1951 at Grenada Hospital, Grenada, Grenada County, Mississippi, at age 76; at 7:30 a.m, after suffering a stroke on Friday (June 8.) Funeral services were held on 10 June 1951 at Garner Brothers Chapel, Grenada, Grenada County, Mississippi; at 3 o'clock officiated by her pastor, the Rev. W. Taylor Clarke. Pallbearers were Roscoe Davis, Will Harris Crowder, John Ed Carpenter, Julian Lockett, Byron Hunter and Cliff Bailey. She was buried on 10 June 1951 at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Grenada, Grenada County, Mississippi.

     John Powell Hughes was born on 12 August 1810 at Wilson County, Tennessee. He married Elizabeth Chambers Freeland, daughter of James Freeland and Mary Agnes Kyle, circa 1836 at Smith County, Tennessee. John Powell Hughes was widowed with the death of Elizabeth Chambers (Freeland) Hughes on 2 May 1840 at Tennessee; likely in Hartsville. John Powell Hughes married Mary "Polly" Freeland, daughter of James Freeland and Mary Agnes Kyle, in August 1840 at Smith County, Tennessee. In 1841 John P. Hughes sold a male slave named Asa for a thousand dollars. Asa had belonged to Mary at the time of their marriage. In 1844, John P. Hughes sold a female slave named Beck that had belonged to Mary at the time of their marriage. John Powell Hughes was in the mercantile business circa 1847 at Lewisburg, Marshall County, Tennessee. He and Mary "Polly" Freeland moved circa 1847 to Lewisburg, Marshall County, Tennessee. John Powell Hughes was a farmer and then a merchant. He appeared on the census of 1850 at Marshall County, Tennessee; as age 36, born in Tennessee, a trader with $200 value in real estate. Appearing with him were Gideliah Hughes age 24, a merchant, Mary Hughes age 26, Jane age thirteen, Mary age twelve, James F. age ten, Martha age seven, Charles age five and Mildred A. age two. All were born in Tennessee and Jane, Mary, James and Martha had attended school within the year. John P. Hughes left his family on 10 February 1853 traveling with a draft of horses to Mississippi for trading. He left his family in very destitute conditions with the promise to return as soon as his business was finished. His family heard from him a few times, with the last message being in April 1854. His wife, Mary filed a law suit against him on 4 December 1854 in Smith County, Tennessee. She requested interest in land she owned at their marriage and in the dower of her mother be vested out of John's name and held in trust to support her and the children. John Powell Hughes and Mary Freeland had at least two more children according to Hughes book. Charles H. and Elizabeth Agnes are said to have died in infancy. He died before 26 July 1860 at Smith County, Tennessee.

     John F. Nipper was born circa 1844 at Mississippi. He was the son of Harmon J. Nipper and Selina Koon. John F. Nipper appeared on the census of 1850 in the household of Harmon J. Nipper at Yalobusha County, Mississippi, as age six. John F. Nipper appeared on the census of 1860 in the household of Harmon J. Nipper at St. Francis County, Arkansas, as age seventeen. John F. Nipper began military service on 25 April 1863 at Port Hudson, Louisiana, Confederate States of America, as a Private in Company C, 18 Arkansas Infantry, the same unit in which his father had served. The company muster roll for March and April 1863 states that the recruit was due a bounty. At that time the 18 Arkansas Infantry was attached to the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana and stationed at Port Hudson, Louisiana.

The Siege of Port Hudson occurred May 21-July 9, 1863, between Union forces of the XIX Army Corps, Army of the Gulf, commanded by Maj. Gen. Nathaniel P. Banks and Confederate forces of the 3rd District, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana commanded by Maj. Gen. Franklin Gardner. Casualties were estimated at 5,000 for the Union forces and 7, 208 for the Confederate forces, for an estimated total of 12, 208. In cooperation with Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's offensive against Vicksburg, Union Maj. Gen. Nathaniel P. Bank's army moved against the Confederate stronghold at Port Hudson on the Mississippi River. On May 27, after their frontal assaults were repulsed, the Federals settled into a siege which lasted for 48 days. Banks renewed his assaults on June 14 but the defenders successfully repelled them. On July 9, 1863, after hearing of the fall of Vicksburg, the Confederate garrison of Port Hudson surrendered, opening the Mississippi River to Union navigation from its source to New Orleans.

Thomas applied for letters of administration on the estate of Allen J. Nipper on 20 January 1880, making the required $1000 bond with A. B. Loving and B. F. Johnson as his securities. The court appointed him administrator and "believing it to be the best interest of the said Estate," ordered him to sell for cash, the personal property of A. J. Nipper.
