Creed E. Penn
M, b. 1806, d. 1895
- Relationship
- 3rd great-grandfather of Thana Kathleen White
Creed E. Penn was born in 1806 at Amherst County, Virginia. He was the son of George Penn and Mother Penn. Creed E. Penn married Mary Agnes (Kyle) Freeland circa 1830 at Smith County, Tennessee. Creed E. Penn appeared on the census of 1830 at Smith County, Tennessee; as head of household. Listed in the household were one male 5-10, two males 20-30, one female under 5, two females 5-10, one female 10-15, one female 15-20, two females 20-30, five male slaves and 6 female slaves. This appears to be two families living together. Creed would have been one of the males age 20-30 and his wife Agnes, widow of James Freeland, would be one of the females age 20-30. The male age 5-10, two females age 5-10, one female 10-15 and one female 15-20 are likely her children by James Freeland. The other male and female age 20-30 and the female under 5 are likely a second family. Creed Penn, John Morris and Bill Strange signed as witnesses to the public inspection of the census in December 1830. Creed Penn, Bowman Turner and Thomas Walker secured a bond of two thousand five hundred dollars at the February 1834 term of circuit court in Smith County, Tennessee. Creed was appointed administrator of the estate of George Penn, deceased. Creed Penn rendered into court an inventory of George Penn's estate at the May 1834 term. Creed Penn sold lot 20 in the town of Rome, Tennessee to Stephen M. James in July 1834. In February 1835, Creed Penn petitioned the circuit court for permission to sell one Negroe from George Penn's estate in order to pay estate debts. Permission was granted for the sale to be held in Alexandria "for ready money" after a twenty day notice was posted. In August 1835 Creed Penn petition the court and was granted permission to sale five Negroes from George Penn's estate in order to make distribution to the heirs. Bat, Delphia, Preston, Caroline and a small child were to be sold at public auction at the Courthouse in Carthage "for ready money" to be highest bidder. He was ordered to make a report at the next term of court. He appeared on the census of 1840 at Smith County, Tennessee; as head of household. Enumerated were two males under age five, one male age 30 to 40, one female age 5 to 10, one female age 15 to 20, and one female age 30 to 40. Also included in the household were four slaves, one female age 24 to 36 and three females under age ten. Creed and Agnes were likely the male and female 30-40. The two males under five were likely their sons Robert and Paul. The female 5-10 was likely their daughter Mildred and the female 15-20 was likely the daughter of Agnes and her first husband, James Freeland. He and Mary Agnes Kyle were divorced on 12 February 1846 at Smith County, Tennessee; Agnes claimed Creed had inflicted personal abuse upon her. Mary Jane (Penn) Stokes wrote her will on 24 March 1868, stating that Creed Penn was to receive "the note known as the Jack Johnson note Executed by him to me for the Barnard tract of Land - or if he can get the Land back - then the Land or whatever he can make of said note I will to him during his natural life and at his death to his the said Creed Penn's lawful children. And I further more will and request that Creed Penn take the two Treed Girls Ailcy and Lilly - Whom I have apprenticed and in all things do for them as I have agreed to do And I further more will and Ordain and hereby appoint and constitute Creed Penn the Executer of this my last Will and Testament." Creed E. Penn appeared on the census of 1870 at Grenada County, Mississippi; age 63, born in Virginia. He was enumerated as a farmer with $400 value in personal property and eligible to vote. Enumerated with him were Robert B. Penn, a 33 year old farmer born in Tennessee and William Brookman, a 21 year old farm laborer, born in New York and also eligible to vote. Interestly, a C. E. Penn age 59 and Elizabeth Penn age 35, were living near Carrollton on 15 August when they were enumerated on the 1870 census. This may be a Christopher Penn that was mentioned in other records. He appeared on the census of 1880 at Grenada County, Mississippi; as age 75 and living in the household of Henry and Louisa Heath. He was a doctor in 1880 at Grenada County, Mississippi.
Creed E. Penn died in 1895 at Grenada, Grenada County, Mississippi. He was buried at Spring Hill Cemetery, Grenada, Grenada County, Mississippi.
