He owned his farm, which was listed as number 105 on the farm schedule, free of mortgage. Agnes Hughes was enumerated as his wife, age 51 and the mother of five children with four living. Included in the household were two sons; Earnest, a 21 year old carpenter and Oliver, a 16 year old farm laborer. Also included in the household were two daughters, 23 year old Freeland and 19 year old Mary. He suffered the death of his daughter, Georgie Freeland Hughes on 29 June 1905 at St. Thomas Infirmary, Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee.

Hughes was enumerated as age 69, head of household and a farmer who owned his farm located on the Cedar Bluff Road, free of mortgage. The farm was listed as number 72 on the farm schedule. Mildred Hughes was enumerated as his wife, age 60 and the mother of five children with three living. Included in the household was a son, Oliver age 22 and a daughter, Mary age 20, both single. James Hughes appeared on the 1910 census twice on the same page. His first entry was as head of household with his two single sisters, 54 year old Jennie and 52 year old Lucy. They had been enumerated as Vinnie May Hughs and Lucia Hughs. James was enumerated as Jame Hughs age 69 and a farmer owning the farm # 71 free of mortgage, but working for wages. Researcher's Note: James appears to be living with his wife, son Oliver and daughter Mary on the farm he owned which is listed as #72 on the farm schedule. He also appears as the owner of farm # 71 where his two single sisters lived and he was listed as head of household and working for wages. Farm #71 was likely owned by all the Hughes siblings and had likely been their parents land.

James Little Berry Hughes died on 26 January 1911 at R. F. D. 10, Lebanon, Wilson County, Tennessee, at age 71. He was buried at Piper-Hughes Cemetery, Cedar Bluff, Trousdale County, Tennessee.
