John Galbreath

     John Galbreath was born on 23 May 1836 in Illinois. He was the son of William Hunter Galbreath and Louisa Lashbrook. He married Pelina Clar on 23 February 1858. Pelina was born on 3 January 1839 in Coles County and died on 24 March 1893 in Coles County. She was the daughter of Benjamin Franklin Clar and Sarah C. Hammons. On 28 March 1864 John participated in the Charleston Riod which occurred arund the Charleston Courthouse. He had family in Kentucky that was suffering great hardships and he wanted the Civil War to come to an end. Several US Soldiers were killed in the riot and by the time the riot was over nine were dead and twelve had been wounded. John along with others were captured and sent to Fort Delaware. The riot was blamed on the Peace Democrats who were part of the Copperheads which was a vocal faction of Democrats in the Northern States who opposed the Civil War. They wanted an immediate peace settlement with the Confederates. Republicans called these anti-war Democrats Copperheads likening them to a venomous snake. After the fall of Atlanta in September 1864 the Union success seemed assured and Copperhead movement collapsed. President Lincoln ordered the release of the men who had been imprisoned at Fort Delaware on 4 November 1864. John was injured in an accident around 1882 and lost both his legs. His obituary indicated that he always managed to get about pretty well with the aid of crutches. John and Pelina were both buried in Knoch Cemetery in Rardin in Coles County. According to census records they had at least six children including Sarah L. Galbreat, Phebe Jane Galbreat, Margaret Ann Galbreat, William B. Galbreat, Emma E. Galbreat, and Mary Catherine Galbreat. According to notes attached to the cemetery record there were two additional children.

John Galbreath died on 3 May 1911 at age 74.

     William Blackburn Galbreath was born on 3 April 1838 in Illinois. He was the son of William Hunter Galbreath and Louisa Lashbrook. William married Caroline Closson Leac on 23 August 1885 at the residence of Dr. Closson. William was a state senator who was elected in 1884 as a democrat in a republican district. He was a prominent and wealthy stockman and farmer at the time. Caroline was a step-daughter of Jas. Q. Howar of New York who had been counsel to Nova Scotia under President Lincoln. William died the following month from a heart attack following the return on the train from a week-long trip with Caroline to Chicago.

William Blackburn Galbreath died on 24 September 1885 in Illinois at age 47.
