Daniel Vertner McAlpine was born on 21 July 1837 in near Port Gibson, Claiborne County, Mississippi. He was captured on in April or May 1863 by Banks' army at Springfield Landing in Louisana just before the battle of Port Gibson which occurred on 1 May 1863. He escaped and rejoined his company until the close of the war when he was paroled at Gainesville, Alabama. William and his wife Mary had a total of nine children, six of which were still living in 1891.
