James Garrison Ennis was born in 1802 in Amherst County, Virginia. He was the son of John Ennis and Rachel Junius Campbell. James Garrison Ennis married Catherine Buckley on 29 December 1823 in Kentucky. James married a second time to Margaret Spear, believed to be Margaret Mahala Spear. His wife’s name on the 1850 census was simply Margaret with her birth state listed as Kentucky. Confusion enters the scene on the 1860 census when his wife’s name is Mahila, near same birth year but in Tennessee. There were no primary source records available to the author to prove with absolute certainty that James married a third time. However, examination of census records seems to confirm there were two wives named “Mahalia” and that the first one with the maiden name of Spears was the mother of his children. This is further confirmed by the apparent mother of Margaret Spears, Adda Spears, being listed in the household on the 1850 census. James moved his family to Laayette County, Missouri sometime after his marriage to Margaret Spears. Sometime after the 1850 census James seems to have married a third time to Mahalia Campbel who was born in May 1812 in Tennessee and died on 22 May 1902 in Jasper County. It was said that James was killed at his home by Indians who were supposed to belong to Colonel Ritchey’s command and that his wife was so severely tortured as to render her a cripple for life. This would have been his third wife Mahalia Campbell. James and Margaret are believed to have had at least the following children before his death in 1862: George Washington Ennis who was born around 1828; James E. Ennis who was born around 1829; Thomas Jefferson Ennis who was born around 1830; William H. Ennis who was born around 1831; Julia M. Ennis who was born around 1832; Robert P. The one that got there first was the winner and had the pleasure of presenting “Black Betty” to the parson who took the first drink, then to the bride and groom. All drink from the same bottle.
