She appeared on the census of 1930 at Shelby County, Tennessee; enumerated 8 April. Gertrude was enumerated as the 41 year old divorced head of household and working as a seamstress in her own home. Enumerated with her were three daughters; Etoile age twenty, Catherine age seventeen, Winnie age fifteen and one son, Randolph age nineteen. Randolph was working as a salesman in a filling station and the three daughters were all attending school. Included in the household were two female boarders and one male boarder. Enumerated as a separate household but in the same dwelling was a young married couple paying $25 monthly rent. Gertrude owned a radio and her home valued at $6500.
