He appeared on the census of 1860 at Tallahatchie County, Mississippi; enumerated 2 August. Adrian Thomas was enumerated as age 26, head of household and a farmer with $3900 in real estate value and $17,000 in personal property value. Included in the household were; Mary N. Thomas age 21, John Thomas age two and James T. Thomas age one. He began military service during the Civil War with Ballentines' Regiment, Mississippi Cavalry, Confederate States Army. James was listed as the Deputy Chancery Clerk and the other children had all attended school during 1880. He was co-owner with his brother, B. F. Thomas of Thomas Brothers, a mercantile business they started in 1882 at Grenada, Grenada County, Mississippi. He held membership in "the Knights & Ladies of Honor and had $3000 insurance in same." At the time of his death, he was a director of the Merchant's Bank in Grenada.

Adrian Van Brocklin Thomas died on 13 April 1891 at Grenada, Grenada County, Mississippi, at age 56; after an illness that him kept confined to his room for over three months. Funeral services were held on 14 April 1891 at Presbyterian Church, Grenada, Grenada County, Mississippi; with services conducted by the Rev. J. C. Carothers. Every business in Grenada closed that morning for the funeral. The church was so full that many people had to stand outside. He was buried on 14 April 1891 at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Grenada, Grenada County, Mississippi; with the remains having been escorted to the cemetery by the Odd Fellows.
