The congregation split over the question of predestination into two denominations, Primitive and Missionary Baptist. Both William Powell Hughes and John Walker Hughes sided with the Missionary Baptist and John was a faithful member untl his death. He married Virginia "Jennie" Freeland, daughter of James Freeland and Mary Agnes Kyle, on 13 November 1837 at Smith County, Tennessee. John Walker Hughes appeared on the census of 1840 at Smith County, Tennessee; as head of household, one of two males age 20 to 30, with two males under age 5 and one female age 20 to 30. Also listed were eight slaves, one male age 55 to 100, 4 females under age 10, one female age 10 to 24, one female age 24 to 36 and one female age 36 to 55. Three persons were engaged in agriculture. Misher Cunningham was enumerated as age 65, head of household and a farmer. He owned his farm located on the Hartsville and Lebanon Road, which was listed as number 19 on the farm schedule. Ophelia A. Cunningham was enumerated as his wife, age 60 and the mother of eight children with six still living. Included in the household were two sons, Herman M., a 35 year old farm laborer and Othniel, a 20 year old student. Ophelia (Hughes) Cunningham and Misher Cunningham lived at R. F. D. 11, Lebanon, Wilson County, Tennessee. Ophelia (Hughes) Cunningham appeared on the census of 1920 in the household of Misher Cunningham at Trousdale County, Tennessee; enumerated 13 January. Misher Cunningham was enumerated as age 75, head of household and a farmer. He was working for himself and his farm was listed as number 45 on the farm schedule. Ophelia Cunningham was enumerated as his wife, age 70. Included in the household was a son, John W. Cunningham age 39, single and a laborer on the home farm. Also living in the household were Will Drummit a 26 year old farm laborer and his wife, Maudie age 17.

Ophelia (Hughes) Cunningham died on 27 November 1921 at Trousdale County, Tennessee, at age 72. Ophelia's son-in-law, Hick Stanford made the burial arrangements which included burial clothes, a gray casket, box and use of the hearse. She was buried on 29 November 1921 at Hartsville Cemetery, Hartsville, Trousdale County, Tennessee.
