The 2 January 1906 issue of The Guthrie Daily Leader published an article detailing the accidental fire that occurred on 1 January that caused the death of Ruby Sharp. It stated that Ruby and her younger brother were alone at home when Ruby attempted to light a fire using coal oil. Her clothes were ignited and she was "horribly burned" on her face, hands and breast and likely inhaled the flames. Three doctors worked all night to save her life.
