     Charles A Womack Sr. was born on 18 July 1917 in Martinsville, Virginia, the son of Dr. George T. Womack and Lena Robins. Charles graduated from Virginia Tech and moved to Danville in 1938. He founded Womack Electric Supply which he developed into a chain of stores throughout Virginia and North Carolina. He married Grace Estelle Harris, daughter of Edgar Starr Harris and Lucy Estelle Phillips, on 2 October 1941 in Mount Vernon Methodist Church, Danville, Virginia, at 11:00 in the morning by the Rev. J.B. Winn assisted by the Rev. T. Rosser Reeves, pastor of the First Methodist church in Martinsville. Grace wore a wool costume suit of Venetian blue, with wolf trim and black accessories. Dr. Charles T. Womack, father of the bridegroom, served as best man. On 15 July 1967 Charles announced that he was going to run as an Independent Democratic canditate in the November general election for state senator in the 12th district. He was quoted in the Richmond Times Dsipatch as feeling "impelled to run because, as he put it, the district's Democratic committee held a closed convention to nominate two candidates and denied the district's Democratic voters a voice in the selection of the nominees." He based his platform on a conservative business approach to economic issues with a Christian concern for human values. On 1 October 1974 Charles announced the sale of his weekly newspaper, The Danville Commercial Appeal, to his son Charles, Jr., and three other newspaper officials. He continued as the general manager of the Commercial Appeal, as well as six other newspapers printed by Womack Press after the sale.

Charles A Womack Sr. died on 1 June 2005 in Danville, Virginia, at age 87. He was buried on 5 June 2005 in Mountain View Cemetery, Danville, Virginia, after a graveside service.
