On 28 July 1916 he was admitted to Fort Lyon Hospital in Las Animas, Colorado. The hospital was opened in 1907 by the U.S. Navy as a sanitarium for sailors and marines suffering from tuberculosis. On 24 February 1917 James was discharged from Fort Lyon Hospital. It is assumed that he was also discharged from the Navy. He apparently then returned to Richmond, Virginia.

James Ashby Harrison died on 30 April 1917 in Richmond, Independent City (Richmond), Virginia, at age 29 at 3:10 in the morning. His cause of death was tubersosis. He was buried on 1 May 1917 in Maury Cemetery, Richmond, Independent City (Richmond), Virginia.

     John Lawrence Slaughter was born on 28 August 1897 in Fannin, Rankin County, Mississippi, the son of John Newton Slaughter and Jeffie Clara Lawrence. After graduating from A&M College, later known as Mississippi State University, John decided to enter the ministry. He became a student in the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky sometime around 1920. Afterfour years of study he obtained a degree of doctor of theology.

John Lawrence Slaughter married Margaret Elizabeth Hooker, daughter of Edmond Goodman Hooker and Minnie Jane Cottrell, on 12 September 1923 in Richmond, Virginia. Doctor Slaughter accepted a call to the pastorate of Leigh Street Baptist Church in Richmond Virginia and assumed his duties on February 1, 1925. The church had been without a pastor since early in 1924. It had a membership of 1500 in 1925 and was very active in youth ministry with Sunday school attendance averages around 800. He remained their pastor until 1938 when he moved to Birmingham, Alabama and assumed the duties of pastor of The First Baptist Church in that city. John Lawrence Slaughter and Margaret Elizabeth (Hooker) Slaughter lived in April 1930 at Richmond, Independent City (Richmond), Virginia, at 1928 Princess Anne Avenue. John Lawrence Slaughter and Margaret Elizabeth (Hooker) Slaughter lived in April 1940 in Homewood City, Jefferson County, Alabama, at 301 Poinciana Drive. John, his wife Margaret, and his daughter Jane visited Minnie Jane Hooker, Margaret's mother, in April 1941.

Dr. Slaughter was a former president of the Alabama Baptist convention, a member of the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist convention for 18 years. He was also the president of the South Carolina Baptist Convention in 1959. John Lawrence Slaughter was widowed with the death of Margaret Elizabeth (Hooker) Slaughter on 15 November 1976 in Boulder, Colorado.

John Lawrence Slaughter died on 29 May 1979 in Boulder, Colorado, at age 81 at his home after a brief illness. Funeral services were held on 1 June 1979 in East Boulder Baptist Church, Boulder, Colorado. He was buried in Fort Logan National Cemetery, Boulder, Colorado.
