James Higginbotham

     James Higginbotham was born on 25 December 1729 in Amherst County, Virginia, the son of John Joseph Higginbotham who was born in Barbados in 1695 and Frances Riley who was born in Ireland in 1696.

In 1769 James was a vestryman of Lexington Parish in Albermarle County. In 1778 he was appointed Major of the Amherst Militia and was later promoted to Colonel in the 9th Virginia Regiment. He was chiefly engaged in the recruiting service in which it was said he was more than ordinarily sucessful. He married Rachel Campbell, daughter of Henry Campbell and Margaret Charity Catlett, on 30 May 1779 in Amherst County, Virginia.

James Higginbotham died on 14 March 1813 in Amherst County, Virginia, at age 83. He was buried in Amherst County, Virginia, likely in the Higginbotham Family Cemetery. This cemetery is located on property orginally divided between the siblings of Moses Higginbotham in 1751. It is the oldest cemetery bearing the Higginbotham name in the Unites States. The only marked grave is that of Thomas Higginbotham. His large stone is surrounded by graves marked with field stones said to be the graves of his slaves that were freed before the Civil War.

Joseph likely married Lucy Wells on 1 June 1803 in Amherst County. He served in the War of 1812 as a Corporal in the 5th Regiment of the Virginia Militia. In June 1818 he received a grant of 100 acres of land in Bedford County for his services during the war. It is likely that Joseph and Lucy had at least seven children including Joseph Cabell Higginbotham, Jr. who was born in 1821.

Joseph Cabell Higginbotham died on 18 November 1842 in Fairy Dale, Bedford County, Virginia, at age 60.

George Washington Higginbotham

     George Washington Higginbotham was born on 20 December 1783 in Amherst County, Virginia. He was the son of James Higginbotham and Rachel Campbell. He married Elizabeth Cashwell in 1810. She was the daughter of Henry Cashwell and was his first cousin, once removed. Following her death he married Johannah Croxton Higginbotham who was born in 1794 and died in 1860. She was the daughter of Aaron Higginbotham, Jr., and Nancy Croxton.

George was a colonel in the Virginia Militia and served during the War of 1812. He was called into active service on 12 January 1814 and served in the 90th Regiment, 3rd Brigade, and 2nd Division of the Virginia Militia. While with the 90th in 1814 he was attached to the 6th Regiment of Infantry and stationed at Norfolk, Virginia. He was commissioned as a Lieutenant in April 1812, as a Captain in 1818, as a Major in 1823, and finally as a Colonel on 8 March 1824.

George and his second wife Joannah had at least eight children including William Aaron Higginbotham who was born in 1823 and died in 1898; Ann Eliz Higginbotham who was born in 1825 and died in 1827; George Washington Higginbotham, Jr., who was born in 1825; Joseph Absalom Higginbotham who was born in 1828 and died in 1904; Mary Frances Higginbotham who was born in 1830 and died in 1913; Nancy Higginbotham who was born in 1833 and died in 1848; Daniel Higginotham who was born in 1836 and died in 1862; and Johannah Jane Higginbotham who was born in 1840.

George Washington Higginbotham died on 30 April 1863 in Amherst County, Virginia, at age 79.

George married Caley Grady in Amherst County on 4 December 1786. Henry served in the North Carolina militia in 1779 and on his first tour of duty served as a guard for the British Prisoners at the Barracks in Albemarle County, Virginia.

Henry and Catey had at least one child named Elizabeth Cashwell. She married George Washington Higginbotham in 1810. George was her first cousin, once removed.

Henry Cashwell died after 1830 in Virginia.

Dorothy earned a bachelor's degree in education in 1963 and a master's degree in 1974, both from the Emporia State University. She was a teacher of home economics at Emporia State University and a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church. Dorothy Lea Bruner was widowed with the death of William Francis Dotson on 30 October 1994 in Emporia, Lyon County, Kansas.

Dorothy Lea Bruner died on 26 January 2003 in Emporia, Lyon County, Kansas, at age 87 at Emporia Care Home. She was buried in Saint Andrews Episcopal Church Columbarium, Emporia, Lyon County, Kansas.
