He was a scratch golfer who won the Men's Falls Cities Championship four times and was inducted into the Kentucky Golf Hall of Fame in 1998. Fred was a Korean War Army Veteran.

In 1958 he graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy with a bachelor's degree and served as a naval officer. In 1962 he entered the University of Tennessee and graduated in 1965 from the law school with his juris doctor degree. He then entered into law practice in Paris, Tennessee and worked as a lawyer until he begin his Circuit Court Judgeship in 1984.

Charles Snell Joyner married Julya Estella (Campbell) McGinnis, daughter of George Washington Campbell and Hester Taylor Penner, after 1910. Charles Snell Joyner registered for the draft for World War I on 12 September 1918, while living at Macon, Bibb County, Georgia. He and Julya Estella (Campbell) Joyner lived on 2 January 1920 at Macon, Bibb County, Georgia, at 101 Summett Avenue. Charles Snell Joyner was widowed with the death of Julya Estella (Campbell) Joyner on 8 May 1929 in Bibb County, Georgia.
